As part of AMI Arts Festival 2026, Kolkata Centre for Creativity presents Hamlet, a compelling adaptation of William Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy by acclaimed theatre group Swapnasandhani.
Reimagined within the socio-political realities of contemporary India, the production revisits Shakespeare’s enduring questions of power, betrayal, morality, justice and the burden of choice. Drawing inspiration from Jacques Derrida’s Specters of Marx, it approaches the ghost not simply as a supernatural presence, but as a figure of history, memory and unresolved injustice.
As Hamlet confronts the truth surrounding his father’s death, the familiar story unfolds as a reflection on political violence, ambition, conflict and the loss of innocence. Through a contemporary theatrical language, Swapnasandhani brings a classic text into conversation with the anxieties of the present.
