Kolkata Centre for Creativity, in collaboration with Museo Camera, presents Touching Light, an exhibition marking 200 years of photography and reflecting on the material and cultural history of analogue image-making.
Bringing together rare 19th-century photographic works alongside practices by contemporary Indian photographers, the exhibition situates photography as both archive and ongoing process. It traces the evolution of the medium while foregrounding its continued relevance in a digital age.
The display includes early photographic formats such as Carte de Visite by Bourne & Shepherd and albumen prints, alongside historically significant series like Beauties of Lucknow. These works are presented in dialogue with contemporary analogue practices, creating a layered view of technique, subject, and intention.
Across the exhibition, photography is approached as a tactile and time-based process. Grain, exposure, and chemical traces remain visible, shaping images that carry both precision and unpredictability. Each work reflects the physical engagement between light, material, and time.
Touching Light invites viewers to consider photography beyond the instant image — as a gradual act of formation where light, surface, and memory come together.
