Few filmmakers in Indian cinema have captured the country’s social and political changes as vividly as Shyam Benegal. With a career spanning over five decades, his films have given voice to the marginalized, questioned power structures, and celebrated resilience.

Part of the AMI Arts Festival 2025 at the Kolkata Centre for Creativity, “The Lens of Revolution” is a two-month retrospective curated by Benegal’s long-time collaborator, Atul Tiwari. The event features screenings of his landmark films, exhibitions, panel discussions, and conversations with collaborators and contemporary filmmakers influenced by his work.

Rooted in realism and humanism, this retrospective shows how Benegal’s cinema transforms storytelling into a quiet yet powerful act of social change.
