This March, join us a KCC for an immersive 3-day tempera workshop and explore one of India's oldest artistic traditions! Tempera painting, a method that uses natural pigments and earth colors, has been integral to Indian art for centuries, deeply connected to nature through its material choices. The pigments derived from minerals, plants, and other natural resources not only offer vibrant, enduring hues but also speak to the harmonious relationship between art and the environment. WHAT WE’LL COVER:
8 March 2025 (Saturday)
- 11 AM: Introduction and brief history of tempera painting
- 11:30 AM: Preparation of board for tempera painting, adhesive making, and layout drawing
- 1 – 1:30 PM: Proper ground preparation for the painting for a suitable surface of the work
9 March 2025 (Sunday)
11 AM – 1:30 PM: Practical Session | Basic techniques of tempera: drawing from layout, creating one’s own colour, mixing pigments, practicing key techniques of applying thin, transparent layer of colour
22 March 2025 (Sunday)
11 AM – 1 PM: Detail Work | Controlling brushwork, fundamentals of colour mixing and achieving wide range of tones and shades with tempera paint, while the final steps will include how to preserve tempera painting for long term durability
1 – 1:30 PM: Q+A and doubt clearing session
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:
- Understanding of Tempera Paint: Knowledge of what tempera paint is, its history, and how it differs from other painting mediums like oil or acrylic
- Materials and Tools: How to select and use the right materials, colours, brushes and surfaces best suited for this medium
- Techniques of Application: Specific techniques for applying tempera, such as layering and creating fine details with thin layers of paint
- Color Mixing and Pigment Preparation: How to mix your own pigments, create custom colors, and prepare adhesive which are the traditional binder for tempera paint
- Surface Preparation: The process of preparing your painting ground to achieve the best results with tempera paint
- Creating Your Own Artwork: You will have the opportunity to create a small painting from start to finish, applying all the techniques and knowledge you've gained throughout the workshop
ABOUT THE FACILITATOR
Saumen Khamrui studied both undergraduate and postgraduate at Government College of Art and Craft, Calcutta. He secured a doctoral degree from Calcutta University with his research titled 'Genre Painting of Bengal: A Critical Study of Landscape (1850 to 1950)’. He participated in number of prestigious group exhibitions in India and abroad and seven solo shows on tempera painting, and has received a number of awards since his studentship. He is a member of the Society of Contemporary Artists, Kolkata.
