Kolkata Centre for Creativity presents Sita Anjaneya Katha, a compelling Kathakali performance by renowned exponents Proloy Sarkar and Ramyani Roy.
Rooted in a poignant episode from the Ramayana, the performance brings alive the meeting of Sita and Hanuman in the Ashok Vatika. Set in Hindi, this presentation opens the classical language of Kathakali to a wider audience while retaining the depth and rigour of the form.
The narrative unfolds with Hanuman’s journey across the ocean in search of Sita, who remains in exile and sorrow. In a moment of profound stillness, he presents Rama’s ring as a symbol of hope and reassurance. What follows is an exchange marked by faith, tenderness, and unwavering devotion, as Sita entrusts Hanuman with her churamani.
Through intricate abhinaya, stylised movement, and expressive storytelling, the performance transforms this intimate encounter into a deeply moving visual experience. It reflects on themes of longing, trust, and the enduring bond between Sita and Rama.
This presentation offers audiences an opportunity to engage with Kathakali not only as a classical form but as a living narrative tradition that continues to resonate across time and context.
