Kolkata Centre for Creativity presents a screening of Faqir, a short art film directed by acclaimed filmmaker Goutam Ghose. The film is an adaptation of the short story Faqir by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay, the celebrated Bengali author known for his deeply humane portrayals of rural life and the struggles of ordinary people.
Set against the stark realities of poverty, the film follows the life of a wandering fakir and his wife as they attempt to survive on the margins of society. While the fakir remains devoted to his spiritual beliefs and identity as a holy mendicant, his wife is confronted daily with the harsh realities of hunger, insecurity, and social neglect.
Through a minimalist and realistic cinematic style, Goutam Ghose brings emotional depth to this intimate narrative, highlighting the dignity and resilience of those living in extreme hardship. The film quietly examines the tension between spiritual faith and material survival, while questioning society’s tendency to romanticize poverty instead of confronting its realities.
Subtle, evocative, and deeply humane, Faqir reflects on how poverty shapes relationships, belief, and the fragile balance between hope and survival.
