KCC is proud to host a screening of Louis Kahn’s Tiger City, a 2019 documentary directed by art historian and filmmaker Sundaram Tagore, which explores the legendary architect Louis I. Kahn’s life, legacy, and visionary architecture. Featuring stunning visuals and insightful interviews, Sundaram Tagore’s direction brings a fresh perspective to Kahn’s architectural journey.
The screening will be followed by a Q+A session with the director.
About the Film:
Louis Kahn’s Tiger’s City is a documentary directed by Sundaram Tagore that explores the life and legacy of the legendary architect Louis I. Kahn. Through stunning visuals and insightful interviews, the film delves into Kahn’s architectural masterpieces and his creative philosophy, focusing on his transformative work in Bangladesh and beyond. This film offers a unique glimpse into Kahn’s impact on modern architecture, shedding light on his visionary designs and their cultural significance. Two-time Academy Award-winning Hollywood actress Debra Winger made a special trip to Calcutta and Bangladesh to appear in the film, alongside the only South Asian Pritzker Prize-winning architect, Balkrishna Doshi, and the film maker Louis Kahn’s son, Nathaniel Kahn.
About the Director:
Sundaram Tagore is a Calcutta-born, Oxford-educated art historian, gallerist, and award-winning filmmaker. A descendant of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, he promotes East-West dialogue through his four art galleries and cultural events. His debut film, The Poetics of Color: Natvar Bhavsar, won several awards and screened globally. Tagore's academic background includes a D.Phil. in modern history from Oxford, where he studied architects like Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis Kahn. Before opening his own gallery in 2000, he worked as a director at Pace Wildenstein Gallery. He has advised numerous international institutions, including the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi and the United Nations. A writer and lecturer, Tagore contributes to publications like ARTnews and Art in America. In 2015, he curated Frontiers Reimagined at the Venice Biennale, an exhibition exploring cultural boundaries, which drew 25,000 visitors and received global media attention.
