Founded in Kolkata in 2013, The Folk Foundation is known for reinterpreting South Asian folk traditions through a contemporary musical lens. Drawing inspiration from folk music across Bengal, Assam, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and beyond, the ensemble blends traditional melodies with influences of jazz, blues, reggae, rock, Latin, and world music to create a distinctive and immersive sound.
The Tales of Bangdi is an evening of music, storytelling, and cultural memory, where songs become journeys across landscapes, communities, and generations. Staying true to the spirit of KCC Offstage, the performance offers audiences an intimate experience that celebrates the enduring vitality of folk traditions while presenting them in a fresh, contemporary form.
About the Band
The Folk Foundation is a contemporary folk ensemble established in Kolkata in 2013 with the vision of bringing the rich musical traditions of South Asia to new audiences. The band explores lesser-known folk repertoires alongside the poetry of mystic saints such as Kabir, Meera Bai, Amir Khusrau, and Bulleh Shah, presenting them through innovative arrangements while preserving their traditional essence. Their performances create a unique dialogue between heritage and modernity, making folk music accessible, relevant, and deeply engaging for contemporary listeners.
