Kolkata Centre for Creativity returns with KCC Baithakkhana | Chapter 3, a three-day Bengali literary meet that brings together writers, performers, scholars, and audiences around the theme of সীমানা / Border.
Curated by Chandril Bhattacharya and Sanchari Mookherjee, this edition looks at how boundaries, both seen and unseen, shape our lives and creative work. The programme includes talks, discussions, debates, readings, performances, and music, focusing on how borders appear in literature and popular media.
Theme:
সীমানা / Borderসীমানা মানা বা না-মানার ওপর নির্ভর করে আমাদের আচরণ। দেশের সীমানার ওদিকের লোকদের আমরা কী চোখে দেখি, জাতের গন্ডির বাইরের লোক, লিঙ্গের গণ্ডির বাইরের লোক, ভাষার গণ্ডির বাইরের লোককে বন্ধু মনে করি না শত্রু — এই দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি অনুযায়ী নির্ধারিত হয় আমাদের নীতি ও সভ্যতা। গদ্য বা পদ্যের প্রচলিত সংজ্ঞার চৌকাঠ ভেঙে অনেকে শিল্পে বিপ্লব এনে দেন। ইতিহাসে দেখা যায়, সীমানার এ-ধারে যিনি নায়ক, ও-ধারে তিনিই উগ্রপন্থী, খলনায়ক। আর সমাজ আমাদের দশদিকে যে একশো সীমানা টেনে দিয়েছে, সেগুলোকে আমরা কীভাবে ঠেলছি টানছি বেঁকাচ্ছি, তার ওপর নির্ভর করে আমাদের সুখ আর উত্তাল ফেসবুক।
The theme considers a wide range of boundaries: geographical, social, linguistic, cultural, and psychological. It reflects on how individuals and communities perceive those who exist beyond these limits, and how such perceptions influence ideas of identity, belonging, and conflict. Across history and storytelling, the same figure may be seen differently depending on which side of a border they inhabit.
The sessions also look at how writers and artists move beyond fixed forms and ideas, creating new ways of expression. In doing so, they redraw creative boundaries and open new possibilities within literature and performance.
KCC Baithakkhana continues to be a space for sharing and conversation, inviting people to think about borders in today’s world, where more often than not, the lines begin to blur.
DAY 2
Session 1: আর্ট ফিল্ম ও কমার্শিয়াল ফিল্ম: তফাত ঘুচে যাচ্ছে? (Art film & commercial film: Does border exist?)
Featuring Anjan Dutt and Chanchal Chowdhury in conversation with Chandril Bhattacharya as moderator.
সীমান্তের দুই পাশ থেকে দুই প্রখ্যাত মানুষ এক সঙ্গে আসছেন এই আড্ডায়। ওপার থেকে অভিনেতা চঞ্চল, আর এপার থেকে অভিনেতা ও পরিচালক অঞ্জন। তাদের কথোপকথন দিয়েই শুরু হচ্ছে এই সাহিত্য আড্ডা।
In this discussion, cinema’s creative lines blur and the personal meets the political. What seems separate starts to overlap. Stories transcend the labels of art and commerce, becoming spaces where vision, voice, and reality intersect.

Session 2: কাঁটাতারের কাটাকুটি: খণ্ডিত বাংলা, (Barbed Boundaries: Divided Bengal)
বাংলা কি সত্যিই ভাগ হয়ে গেছে, না কি স্মৃতি, ভাষা আর সংস্কৃতি এখনও আমাদের জুড়ে রেখেছে? কাঁটাতারের এপার-ওপার থেকে উঠে আসবে সেইসব গল্প, যেখানে ইতিহাস শুধু বইয়ের পাতায় নয়, মানুষে মানুষে বেঁচে থাকে।
Joining this adda are Semanti Ghosh and Jayanta Sengupta, in conversation with Shishir Roy. Expect a rich exchange of ideas that moves between past and present, tracing how Bengal continues to reshape itself across time, distance, and lived experience.

কখন প্রথম “সীমা ছাড়িয়ে” গিয়েছিলেন? একটু দেরিতে বাড়ি ফেরা, স্কুলে ফাঁকি মেরে সিনেমা দেখতে যাওয়া, না কি নিজের মতো করে বাঁচার সাহস?
In this candid conversation, Anirban Chakraborti, Jojo Mukherjee, and Isha Saha revisit those moments with humour, nostalgia, and honesty, moderated by Prithwi Bose.
এই আড্ডায় আছে একটু দুষ্টুমি, একটু নস্টালজিয়া, আর অনেকটা নিজের গল্প খুঁজে পাওয়ার সুযোগ।

Session 4: কবিতার গোধূলি: অর্থের সীমা পেরিয়ে (Poetry’s horizon: Crossing the boundaries of meaning)
কবিতা কি শুধু শব্দে থাকে, না কি শব্দের বাইরেও তার বিস্তার? অর্থের সীমানা ছাড়িয়ে, কবিতা কখন স্পর্শ করে অনুভূতি, নীরবতা আর অনির্বচনীয়কে?
এই বক্তৃতায় জয় গোস্বামী আমাদের নিয়ে যাবেন সেই জগতে, যেখানে ভাষা নিজের সীমা অতিক্রম করে, আর কবিতা হয়ে ওঠে এক অন্তর্লোকের যাত্রা।
In this session, poetry moves beyond structure and definition, opening up spaces where meaning is felt as much as it is understood. It is an invitation to experience language at its most expansive and intimate.

Session 5: টোবা টেক সিং:মান্টোর কাহিনিতে সীমানা (Toba Tek Singh: Borders in Manto’s stories)
সীমানা কি কেবল মানচিত্রে আঁকা, না কি মানুষের চেতনায় তার অমোচনীয় রেখা রয়ে যায়? মান্টোর গল্পে বিভাজন কখনও রাষ্ট্রের, কখনও মনের—কখনও তা বাস্তবের থেকেও বেশি অস্বস্তিকর।
এই আলোচনায় Srijit Mukherji, Abdul Kafi ও Yashodhara Ray Chaudhuri ফিরে দেখবেন সাদত হাসান মান্টোর জগৎ—যেখানে উন্মাদনা প্রশ্ন তোলে রাষ্ট্রকে, আর ইতিহাস নিজেই হয়ে ওঠে এক অদ্ভুত অনিশ্চয়তা; সঞ্চালনায় Srikumar Chattopadhyay।
This session approaches Manto’s borders not as lines of separation, but as fractures within consciousness—where the distinction between reason and madness begins to fail, and belonging becomes a problem without resolution.

Session 6: বেড়া টপকানো সাহিত্য: গদ্যে ও পদ্যে (Beyond the Fence: Prose & Verse)
গদ্য আর পদ্যের মধ্যে নয়, এখানে প্রশ্ন ভাষার সীমানা নিয়ে—লেখক কি সত্যিই নিজের ভাষার গণ্ডি ছাড়িয়ে অন্য ভাষায় নিজের প্রকাশ খুঁজে নিতে পারেন? ভাষা বদলালে কি ভাবনার রূপও বদলে যায়?
এই আলোচনায় রঞ্জন বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় ও শ্রীজাত কথা বলবেন সেই লেখালেখির জায়গা নিয়ে, যেখানে মাতৃভাষার সীমানা ছাড়িয়ে অন্য ভাষায় সৃষ্টির অভিজ্ঞতা তৈরি হয়; সঞ্চালনায় দেবনীতা চক্রবর্তী।

Session 7: দোহাই আলি: ঋত্বিকের ছবিতে দেশভাগ (Dohai Ali: Partition in the films of Ritwik Ghatak)
দেশভাগ শুধু ইতিহাসের একটি অধ্যায় নয়, বরং অসংখ্য ভাঙা-গড়া জীবনের গল্প। ঋত্বিক ঘটকের ছবিতে সেই যন্ত্রণা, সেই বিচ্ছেদ, আর সেই মানুষগুলোর কণ্ঠস্বর আজও প্রতিধ্বনিত হয়।
এই আলোচনায় কমলেশ্বর মুখোপাধ্যায় ও সঞ্জয় মুখোপাধ্যায় ফিরে দেখবেন ঋত্বিকের সিনেমা—যেখানে বাস্তব আর আবেগ একসাথে মিশে তৈরি করে এক অনন্য চলচ্চিত্র ভাষা; সঞ্চালনায় সুদেব সিংহ।
This conversation revisits Ghatak’s cinematic world, where partition is not just a backdrop but a lived, emotional reality. Through his films, personal histories become collective memory, and cinema becomes a space of resistance and reflection.

Session 8: সীমানার কাহিনি সঙ্গে সোমক ঘোষ ও দীপাঞ্জন ঘোষ | Border and its stories by Somak Ghosh and Deepanjan Ghosh
গল্প কি শুধু শোনা যায়, নাকি অনুভবও করা যায়? এই উপস্থাপনায় সোমক ঘোষ ও দীপাঞ্জন ঘোষ গল্প বলার সেই শিল্পকে সামনে আনেন, যেখানে কণ্ঠ, ছন্দ এবং মুহূর্ত মিলিয়ে তৈরি হয় এক জীবন্ত অভিজ্ঞতা।
Blending voice, rhythm, and narrative, the performance creates an immersive space where stories unfold beyond words—evoking images, emotions, and reflections on boundaries and belonging.

সীমা কি শুধু টানা হয়, না কি ভেঙেও যায়? কিছু সীমানা আমাদের বেঁধে রাখে, আবার কিছু সীমানা পেরোনোর মধ্যেই তৈরি হয় নতুন ভাবনা।
এই বক্তৃতায় চন্দ্রিল ভট্টাচার্য খুঁজে দেখবেন সেইসব সীমা আর সীমালঙ্ঘনের জায়গা, যেখানে ব্যক্তিগত, সামাজিক আর সাংস্কৃতিক বোধ একে অপরের সঙ্গে মিশে যায়।
