Dazzling Designs – Bandhani Workshop

Workshop Overview 
Bandhani, a traditional Indian craft that originated in Gujarat and Rajasthan, boasts a rich heritage that spans centuries. This intricate art form, also known as tie and dye hand embroidery, is celebrated for its vibrant colours, intricate patterns, and cultural significance. Be it for festive events or daily wear bandhani embroidery is a popular choice today. Join us at KCC for Dazzling Desgns, a very special workshop on the art of Bandhani. 

By the end of the workshop, you can expect to have learned the following: 
  • What is Bandhani – Introduction and origin. 
  • Legacy of Bandhani in Indian slow fashion industry. 
  • Process and techniques of Bandhani. 
  • Bandhani and its relationship with art and craft. 
What will you cover: 
  • 11:00 am: Introduction of Bandhani 
  • 11:30 am: Sample making by conductor 
  • 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm: Start design making and tying process as per design 
  • 2:00 pm: Start the dyeing process 
  • 3:00 pm: Untie all the work of bandhani 
Trainer profile: 
Pintu Halder was born in 1992 in a village in thes Sundarban. He is a textile artist who completed his Master’s degree from Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan and Bachelor’s degree from Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata. He has built his textile studio in his village in the Sundarbans and continues his artistic practice there. His works are deeply rooted to Indian traditional textile and process. One of the main areas that Halder explores in his practice is natural dye and its versatility. Through his artistic practice, he aims to uplift and empower the local communities by blending creativity with social responsibility. He also tries to provide livelihood opportunities to people living in poverty in the Sundarban region, by training and involving them in different techniques of natural dye.

Floor Art : Alpona Workshop

Workshop Overview 
Alpona is a Traditional Art of Bengal. Alpona is one of the most expressive folk art forms of the floor painting and decorations in bengal.The use of floor decoration is found in every part of India.Alpona is probably derived from Alipona, an art practiced because of the belief that these decorative paintings keep the dwelling place or house safe and prosperous.  Alpona was a form of creative art in Santiniketan in 20th Century ( founded by Rabindra Nath Tagore ). Both of the above said form of Alponas ( Traditional and Santiniketan ) will be demonstrated. There will be a short Lecture on the History of Alpona with images. 

By the end of the workshop, you can expect to have learned the following: 
  • Explain Alpona as an art form 
  • Basic knowledge about different forms of Bengal and Santiniketan Alpona 
  • Drawing different types of designs for Alpona 
  • Methods and materials used in Alpona 
Trainer Profile
Sudhi Ranjan Mukherjee is a distinguished artist and designer with a rich background in painting, Alpona, and stagecraft. Born in Chandannagore, West Bengal, he earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Painting, both with first-class honors, from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata. A National Cultural Scholar at Kala-Bhavana, Visva Bharati, under the guidance of Prof. Dinkar Kowshik, Mukherjee later trained in Applied Art at the National Council of Science Museums, Kolkata.

With over three decades of teaching experience at Visva Bharati, he has created Alponas for various festivals, crafted stage designs, and curated costumes for Tagore's dance dramas. He has won multiple international awards, including at Shankar's International Painting Competitions, and has exhibited his work across India and the U.S., including the North America Bengali Conference (NABC) in Las Vegas.
