This December, KCC's AMI Arts Festival 2024 is hosting a special launch of the latest novel by Madhurima Vidyarthi, The School for Bad Girls, published by Duckbill (Penguin Random House India). This historical fiction sheds light on the women’s emancipation and education movements in India through the story of Kadambini Ganguly—the first Indian woman to study medicine.
The event features author Madhurima Vidyarthi in conversation with Priyadarshinee Guha, discussing the challenges, resilience, and aspirations of women in colonial India.
Copies of the book will be available for signing and sale.
About the book:
Set in 19th-century Calcutta, The School for Bad Girls tells the fictionalized story of Kadambini Ganguly, who dreams of becoming a doctor amidst a rapidly changing society. The novel provides a unique perspective on women’s rights and education at a time when the idea of female students was often seen as a threat to social norms.
