KCC Library presents a Talk with historian Dr. Aparajita Dasgupta-Sengupta, exploring her new book For Home, Family, and Nation: Women and the Politics of Gender in Bengal, 1870–1947 (Orient BlackSwan, 2025) as a part of AMI Arts Festival, 2025. The talk features a short reading by the author followed by a Q&A, offering an intimate opportunity to engage with ideas that shaped modern Bengal. Copies of the book will be available for browsing and purchase. 

This discussion will help to take a closer look at the intersection of gender and cultural history in a way that connects scholarly research with an engaged and curious audience.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
 
Dr. Aparajita Dasgupta-Sengupta is a gender historian whose research spans nationalism, communalism, and social history in colonial and postcolonial Bengal. She has studied at Presidency College and the University of Calcutta, taught across colleges in West Bengal, has been a visiting fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, and a Fulbright Visiting Professor at St Mary’s College, Indiana, USA.. Since 2018, she has been CEO of the West Bengal State Book Board, Kolkata. An accomplished Bangla fiction writer under the name Aparajita Dasgupta, she has authored eleven books, including fiction, essays, and edited works, blending rigorous scholarship with rich cultural storytelling. 

ABOUT THE BOOK

The book traces how gender shaped nationalist politics in late-colonial Bengal, from debates on domesticity, education, and swadeshi to the imagination and contestation of women’s roles in the public sphere. It offers a nuanced exploration of how social, cultural, and political ideas intersect to shape modern Bengal.
