In the land of Ganges, Rupnarayan, Tista, and other notable rivers, boats of various types with diversified building technologies catering various purposes are found. But the art of Boat Making is on the verge of extinction.
Kolkata Centre for Creativity proudly presents a workshop on boat making, facilitated by Swarup Bhattacharyya AKA ‘Boatman of Bengal’. Through this workshop, we will try to understand the process of boat building. Various types of planking patterns, hull construction, nailing, sails, rigs, and knots are to be considered here. Unknown stories about the boat-making and boatmen of Bengal will be an added benefit.

Trainer profile
After completing a Master’s degree in anthropology from Calcutta University, I started the research work on Bengal boat in 1997. Man-Boat Relationship became the focus of research which was observed from an anthropological perspective through intensive field-based investigation. Did research at Viking Ship Museum, Roskilde, Denmark as a Guest Research Scholar and also at the Centre for Maritime Archaeology, Southampton University, UK. Presently working with Exeter University, UK as an Exeter Associate in a project on the Endangered Material Knowledge Programme. Worked with the Anthropological Survey of India as a visiting fellow. Worked as Curator of Maulana Azad Museum, Curatorial Assistant of Indian Museum, Kolkata, Project Coordinator of Cultural Research Institute, and Associate Coordinator of South Asia Network on Dams, Rivers and People, New Delhi.
Actively took part in the process of development of Heritage Boats of Bengal gallery in Kolkata, Water Transport Gallery of IIT-Kharagpur, and Odisha State Maritime Museum, Cuttack.
