CRAFT & DESIGN SESSION 1: LAC DOLL MAKING WORKSHOP

Kolkata Centre for Creativity organized a workshop on Lac Doll making to spread knowledge and awareness about this traditional art form. It is known to all that the Eastern region of India is famous for different kinds of dolls, especially from West Bengal. Artisans from the Sankhari community residing in Purulia, Bankura, Birbhum, Medinipur and Odisha, manufacture these dolls out of fine clay and coat them with lac, collected from the local forests. Lac is a natural resin that comes from an insect that is collected from the trees grown in the local jungles. Being a very enriched and unique art form from India, it has a very deep impression on the tradition of art and craft of India as well as of West Bengal. These dolls have a typical structural formation which gives a separate identity to the dolls. Their form is kept simple with just a basic indication of limbs and other features. The detailing - the addition of eyes, clothes and jewellery - is done using lac to make a complete doll. The artisans who dedicate their lives to these art forms struggle to generate income for their living. These dolls are sold in village fairs as well as during major cultural events such as the Ratha Yatra festival. Nowadays, these dolls can be seen at huge craft fairs in towns and cities.
