Bibhutibhushan in Films

A conversation between filmmaker Kamaleshwar Mukherjee and media personality Anirban Bhattacharyya on the challenges of adapting the works of Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay for cinema.
Bibhutibhushan’s writing is known for its lyrical observation of nature and its quiet exploration of human relationships. Translating such literary depth into visual storytelling requires careful interpretation of character, landscape, and historical context.
During the session, Kamaleshwar Mukherjee will reflect on the creative process of adapting literary narratives for the screen. The discussion will consider questions of fidelity to the original text, cinematic interpretation, and the role of visual language in representing rural Bengal and its cultural memory.

Through conversation and reflection, the event will explore how literature and cinema intersect in shaping new ways of experiencing Bibhutibhushan’s stories.

Bibhutibhushan in Kolkata: The Author & the City, KCC in collaboration with Half Pant History presents a talk by Deepanjan Ghosh that traces the urban and semi-urban landscapes associated with the life and works of Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay.

Drawing on archival material, historical references, and on-ground exploration, the session traces the neighborhoods, schools, and everyday spaces that were part of the author’s life. Through these places, audiences encounter the environments that shaped Bibhutibhushan’s sensibility and creative imagination.

The talk explores how early 20th century Calcutta and the surrounding mofussil towns appear in subtle ways within his writing. Streets, classrooms, railway journeys, and everyday encounters gradually transform into literary memory within his fiction. Blending storytelling with historical insight, the session invites audiences to rediscover the author not only through his texts, but also through the city he moved through and observed.
