Banaras ke Ghat se Awadh ke Angan Tak celebrates the living traditions of Hindustani folk music through the artistry of Padmashree Malini Awasthi. Her repertoire includes folk and semi-classical forms such as thumri, dadra, and kajri in Awadhi, Bhojpuri, Braj, and Bundeli. Her performance traces the journey of folk music as a living archive of community, history, and collective memory, and creating a vibrant blend of devotion, storytelling, and regional poetry, steeped in the musical traditions of Banaras and Awadh.
About the Artist
Padmashree Malini Awasthi is one of the most remarkable exponents of Hindustani folk music, whose voice carries the earthy tones of India’s folk traditions. She was trained under the legendary Girija Devi and has spent over four decades keeping alive the music of Uttar Pradesh. A gold medalist, scholar, and performer par excellence, she was honored with the Padma Shri and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, besides many other prestigious accolades. Her evocative renditions of genres like thumri, dadra, kajri, and tappa, ranging across Awadhi, Bundeli, and Hindi languages, and enthusiasts from around the world admire her craft. She has also lent her voice to films, collaborated with artists across genres, and continues to be a leading voice in preserving India’s cultural legacy.
