Kolkata Centre for Creativity presents তোমার পরশ আসে, the annual Rabindra Jayanti celebration, a two-day programme commemorating the legacy of Rabindranath Tagore.
The event brings together performances, readings, and discussions that reflect Tagore’s contributions to literature, music, philosophy, and the arts.
রবীন্দ্র জয়ন্তী, observed on Bard of Bengal’s birth anniversary, is a time to revisit and celebrate his vast creative universe – where word, music, movement, and thought come together. The programme embraces this spirit through a confluence of forms, including reflective talks, musical performances, recitations, and a dance theatre presentation, each engaging with Tagore’s works in distinct yet interconnected ways.
DAY 1
বসন্ত নবারুণ রাগে | Time: 11:00 AM
A Rabindra Jayanti presentation by the students of Patha Bhavan High School.
The programme brings together song, dance, and recitation inspired by Rabindranath Tagore’s reflections on nature, renewal, and the spirit of spring. Through choreographed performances and choral renditions, students interpret the season’s sense of awakening and poetic expression.
Rooted in Tagore’s vision, the presentation reflects a shared engagement with creativity, cultural memory, and the rhythms of change.
‘PARA SANTIH | Time: 6:00 PM – 6:30 PM
The Musical Substratum of Rabindranath’s ‘Visva’, a talk by Dr. Dheeman Bhattacharyya.
The session reflects on Tagore’s idea of inner harmony through soundarya, ananda, and kalyan, and the philosophy of learning shaped at Santiniketan. It explores how music, aesthetics, and knowledge intersect within Tagore’s vision of Visva-Bharati.
Accompanied by esraj artist Sougata Murmu, the presentation brings together scholarship and sound to engage with Tagore’s intellectual and cultural framework.
ABOUT
- Dr. Dheeman Bhattacharyya teaches at the Centre for Comparative Literature, Institute of Languages, Literature and Culture, Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan, where he has been a faculty member since 2014. Trained in Odissi and the performing arts, he is known for his work as both a performer and scholar, with recognition in India and abroad.
- Sougata Murmu is an artist and musician who plays the esraj and performs across classical and contemporary settings. He will provide live esraj accompaniment for the session.
শিশুতীর্থ (Shishutirtha) | Time: 6:30 PM – 7:00 PM
A performance poetry presentation facilitated by Smt. Bratati Bandopadhyay.
Originally written in English as The Child (1930) – Rabindranath Tagore’s only English poem – and later translated into Bengali by the poet himself, Shishutirtha reflects on childhood as a space of imagination, freedom, and discovery.
The presentation marks the culmination of a 10-day performance poetry workshop, presented as part of KCC’s Rabindra Jayanti celebrations.
Under the guidance of renowned elocutionist Bratati Bandopadhyay, the performance brings together voice, rhythm, and expression through a collective presentation by the workshop participants.
DAY 2
পরাণসখা বন্ধু হে আমার | Time: 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM
An evening of Rabindrasangeet by Prolipto Ghosh, Megh, and Palashi Ghosh.
All three artists were once students in Santiniketan and bring together individual voices shaped by a shared musical and cultural ethos. The programme moves through familiar and lesser-known compositions, reflecting themes of devotion, nature, and human emotion.
The presentation engages with Tagore’s music while tracing the continuing influence of Santiniketan’s artistic traditions.
মন্থন | Time: 6:00 PM – 6:30 PM
A talk by Amit Dasgupta.
The session reflects on the continuing relevance of রক্তকরবী, engaging with its themes of power, resistance, and human values. It considers how Tagore’s critique of control and dehumanisation resonates within contemporary social and cultural contexts.
Through close reading and interpretation, the talk invites audiences to revisit the text as both literature and reflection.
