Join us at KCC Ramjhol 2.0, a celebration of Rajasthani culture at KCC, for a mesmerizing performance of Dastangoi by writer, actor, and director Mahmood Farooqui who is known for his significant contributions to the revival of the art of Dastangoi. 

Dastangoi is a traditional form of Urdu storytelling that dates back to the 13th century, involving the art of oral narration, often focusing on epic tales of adventure and romance. The tradition had almost faded away by the mid-20th century. Their performances are marked by powerful narration, rich language, and minimalistic staging, relying on the storyteller's voice and gestures to captivate the audience.

About the Artiste:   

Mahmood Farooqui is an Indian writer, actor, and director, known for his significant contributions to the revival of the art of Dastangoi, the ancient Urdu oral storytelling tradition. Mahmood Farooqui was born in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. He studied at prestigious institutions such as St. Stephen's College, Delhi, and University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar.  

Farooqui’s Dastangoi performances include "Dastan-e-Chouboli", "Dastan-e-Amir Hamza", and "Dastan-e-Karn Az Mahabharat". He has authored "Beseiged: Voices from Delhi 1857", a significant historical work that delves into the Indian perspective of the 1857 Rebellion, drawing from various primary sources to provide a vivid account of the events in Delhi; and has written extensively on cultural, historical, and social issues in various publications, contributing to the broader discourse on Indian arts and history.  

Farooqui co-directed “Peepli Live” (2010), a critically acclaimed satirical film that explores the issue of farmer suicides in India, and has received various accolades for his work in literature, film, and the performing arts, recognizing his contributions to cultural preservation and innovation.
