The Medieval Bengali Literature Appreciation Course – a series of weekly in-person classes at KCC – explores the filigreed tapestry of Bengali literature from the early and medieval periods, focusing on its devotional, lyrical, and narrative forms. Through close readings of key texts – both oral and written – participants will examine the literary, linguistic, socio-political, and religious developments that shaped Bengali literary culture from the 10th to the 18th centuries. Special attention will be paid to translation, cultural exchange, syncretic traditions, and the impact of major religious movements such as Buddhism, Vaishnavism, Shaktism, and Sufism.
Participants are advised to carry either of the following books: Bangla Sahityer Sankhipto Itihas by Bhudeb Chowdhury [pdf available online on internet archive] or Bangla Sahityer Samagra Itihas by Khetra Gupta
ABOUT THE FACILITATORS
Suromita Kanjilal is a writer, researcher, and educator with 14 years of teaching experience in Bengali, she holds an M.A. from Presidency College and a B.Ed. from the University of Calcutta. Her work spans academic writing, journal publications, and performance-based scriptwriting. Deeply invested in language, literature, and pedagogy, she brings a rich blend of scholarly insight and creative expression to every project she undertakes.
Indrani Bhowmick is a result-driven professional with over a decade of stage experience, she combines strong communication skills with sharp analytical thinking to foster creative and professional growth. Adept at performing under pressure, she has consistently delivered high-quality work across diverse platforms.
