SALT PRINT – A Workshop on Alternative Photography
Mentored by Manoj Kumar Bishwas and conceptualized by KCC Conservation Lab
As part of the retrospective exhibition- LALIT MOHAN SEN: An Enduring Legacy at Emami Art
Lalit Mohan Sen was one of the few who practiced alternative photographic printing in early twentieth-century India. Much of his photographic prints collection comprises silver gelatine prints and a few other techniques. Many of these printing processes are not in practice these days, neither is there an awareness of the same. Without that knowledge of materials and techniques, it is hardly possible for us to appreciate the aesthetic and to intervene in terms of conservation and restoration. The objective of the Salt Print workshop was to explore that artistry with a hands-on experience of preparing salted papers (coated with photo-sensitive emulsions), exposing them, and developing prints.
