This April, KCC presents Divine Dhrupad – a vocal recital in the Darbhanga tradition featuring Hindustani classical vocalist Dr. Sumeet Anand Pandey belonging to the illustrious Darbhanga lineage of vocalists from Bihar, accompanied by Shri Nishaant Singh on the pakhawaj.
Originally sung at temples and later in royal courts and now in public concerts, Dhrupad is known for its calmer nature, majestic gait, and melodic, rhythmic and lyrical richness. This presentation at KCC promises an evening of devotion, tranquility, and melody. <span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"> </span>
ABOUT THE PERFORMER
Dr Sumeet Anand Pandey (stage name) is a hereditary musician of the illustrious Darbhanga lineage of vocalists from Bihar in India known particularly for Dhrupad, the extant form of Hindustani classical music formalised towards the latter half of medieval period. Grandson of Padmashri Pandit Siyaram Tiwari and a disciple of Pandit Abhay Narayan Mallick (grandnephew and master disciple of Padmashri Pandit Ram Chatur Mallick), Sumeet is professionally active in this field as a performer and teacher for over a decade. Sumeet is a graded artist of All India Radio (A.I.R) and an empaneled artist of Indian Council for Cultural Relations (I.C.C.R) and has performed extensively in India as well as toured Berlin, Rome, Paris, Madrid, Hague, London, Prague, Budapest and other European cities for concerts and workshops. He received fellowships from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India and Sahitya Kala Parishad, Government of Delhi and conducted research on Dhrupad, its historical journey and evolving pedagogy, respectively. His debut album titled 'Morning Meditation-Dhrupad of Darbhanga Tradition' was released in 2020 on Naxos World (now ARC Music) worldwide. Supported by a Fulbright Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Fellowship (FNAPE) for 2024-25, Sumeet was hosted as Associate Visiting Professor by the Herb Alpert School of Music, UCLA during Fall 2024 and Winter 2025 terms for concerts, workshop, teaching and research. He performed in Los Angeles, Dallas and New York.
