HOLLOW TIMES (connecting time space and reality)

Hollow Time is a metaphor of time devoid of truth and validity, devoid of ideology and a time lacking in real values. A time that reverberates the sound of agony. A time which is carving inside. As if we are driven into a black hole. Dark cloud is looming over the entire horizon. The entire Meta structure is been rigged against the aspiration of the people. I am sure that light will emerge out of this ‘Hollow Time’ as we have seen in history many times.

CONCEPT NOTE

Hollow Times is a metaphor for the world from which ideology, truth, and values that nurture and sustain life have been drained out. Interestingly though, Hollow Times: KCC Laboratory 3.0 was conceptualized a few months before the pandemic hit us.

So, as we were conceiving a particular kind of Hollow Times, we suddenly found ourselves in an alien version of the same, fighting for life and livelihood with an unpredictable enemy that precipitously spread over the world. Across history, the human race has witnessed many natural and manmade disasters but has managed to survive miraculously. These, however, were also the times when the creative energies have triumphed over destructive forces, and have acted as an incubator for great ideas, philosophies, and a launchpad for revolutionary creative movements.

The time we are living in often reverberates with the sound of agony. The double-edged nature of Development was further exposed during the pandemic as we witnessed migrant labourers— dispossessed of their dignity, livelihood, and sense of security—walk to their villages from the very cities they have helped build. The stark disparity between the privileged and the underprivileged has become even more evident. Under the lengthening dark shadows of development, the comfort of the familiar and the known have become threatened, and memories of the tranquility and peace of life amidst nature have been erased. Our natural relationship with land and surroundings, a simple understanding of identity and co-existence, life’s worth and values are all endangered and pushed into a position of extreme vulnerability.

War, terrorism, religious fundamentalism, widespread hunger, and unemployment are becoming commonplace, and gradually festering wounds that are making the world hollow from within. The entire meta-structure has been stacked against common people and their small aspirations. The artists in this laboratory have responded to this period with their art, and are posing important questions to you—the spectator.

This exhibition is curated by Reena Dewan and Rajib Bhattacharya.
